Take Out Debates: Does Pizza Count as Fast Food?
Tomorrow is National Fast Food Day, and there’s some debate over whether we should celebrate it. While pizza and all our other menu offerings are quick to cook and ideal for take out, does that mean we qualify as a fast food joint? Even if we do, is that a label we want to claim for Alley Cat Pizzeria? The key thing we have to work out is whether or not pizza counts as fast food. Is fast food just food you can make fast, or are there other criteria that put it in the category? Let’s find out.
It’s all in the name, isn’t it? If you can make something fast and get it to your customers within a matter of minutes, it must be fast food, right? Well, we don’t think it’s the simple. Think about the places that undisputedly serve fast food. What do they all have in common? Their food is mass-produced and exactly the same every time. That’s not to say that we don’t consistently serve up quality, but every order from Alley Cat is a little different because it is hand-crafted and made from scratch. We may be efficient and get your order to you quickly, but that’s not because we have a line of pre-made pizzas or frozen fries sitting in our kitchen.
Now, if you read all that and wondered about certain pizza chains and whether they count as fast food, that’s a fair question to ask. Those places have the same menu at every location, and you’ll get the same thing every time you order from them. We think that qualifies those pizza places as fast food restaurants. But just because those places are fast food, that doesn’t mean all pizza is fast food. In fact, we think those places are the exception rather than the rule. They saw the success of traditional fast food places and thought, why not do it with pizza? While there’s nothing wrong with that, we know pizza can be better.
